Market Day

Last week on Friday, almost the whole school got to create their own product for a market day. Our class was selling juice, the only juice around! I spent a lot of hard work creating a poster for our juice. This was my poster:
After Market Day, i tried some juice, and it was amazing! In the juice there were red apples, oranges and a squeeze of lemon. Our juice was one of the most selling products. We sold about 172 cups of juice, and I can't wait to see what other cool things our class will do next year!

Advertising

What is advertising???

What is advertising?
It is when there is like a sale on a newspaper or a video on a site about a product, and sometimes there are funny, cute or sad stuff to make you buy it.

Why does a consumer advertise?
So that people could see how cool their product is, and then more people will buy it, which means companies getting richer.

What have you learnt about advertising?
That advertising makes 100 and thousands and even more kids make their parents buy them a cool product if they watch a cool ad.

What surprised you?
How many kids whine and tantrum just because of how cool an advertisement could be.

What disgusted you?
The same as the last question: that there are so many kids that whine and tantrum just because of how cool an advertisement could be.

What is in our food?

What is in our food?
Written by Sam Holloway

Want to know more about how sugar is bad for you? Click here to see a documentary on it (or scroll down to the end of this post).

The reason you are reading this story is because you want to know what is in our food? Read on to learn.

Everyday men should only have about 9 teaspoons of sugar and children 4 teaspoons. Most people go over the limit, and could get diabetes, a heart attack, or you might even need your teeth pulled out!

If you drink lots of juice, and I mean like 5 and-over-ish bottles a day, any age, your teeth would rot, and possibly all your teeth would have to be pulled out!

Rotten teeth:
*

Did you know?
Did you know that once a 2 year-old girl had to get 6 of her teeth pulled out, because her mother let her drink too much fizzy and/or juice! That's why you need to look after yourself too, not just your mum.

Every year, people, kids and adults, are getting fatter and fatter. As products are getting cheaper, they are also putting way more sugar than you're meant to have! Eg: kids should have about 4 teaspoons or under a day, and Tiny Teddies have about 2x more sugar than kids are meant to have. They have about 7 teaspoons of sugar!!!

Same as low fat or fat free products. As they lower the fat, they increase the sugar. Ever since they lowered the fat, they increased the sugar.

That's why people are getting diabetes, and eating too much sugar; they are eating fat-free stuff. That's why I think that people should stop fat-free products, and lower the sugar, so a lot of the trouble with sugar now will be stopped.

Fun Run

Today (Thursday the 11th) it was the Fun Run! Before the Fun run, I was going to be in the obstacle version, but after that, I chose the competitive version.

It took AGES before it came to the year 5 competitive race. "Year 5 competive racers for BOYS!!!" Mrs Miller cried out. Oh, no! I thought to myself. As a walked to the starting line, my stomach felt weird. I knew I wasn't ready for this. "GO!!!" I suddenly ran as fast as I can; ALL around Paki's paddak all around the original field (the biggest) 4 times!!! (4 laps) After I ran half of Paki's paddak on the first lap, my ribs started hurting... Oh, no... I had the stitch!

After the whole race finished, I ran back to the waiting and watching place. I felt SO dehydrated.

Well, now that the race is finished, I felt glad (even though I came 10th) that I was in the competitive. I hope I do better next time!

Journey through the legends

Journey Through The Legends

Last week on Wednesday, the whole of Nga Rakau Nui performed a show called Journey Through The Legends, that included 4 legends; (in order) Rangi & Papa, How Maui Fished Up New Zealand, The Seven Whales and the legend of Te Mata Peak. The show started from about 6.00 pm to about 8 pm-ish.

We all practiced the show for weeks; practicing lines, practicing actions and even dress rehearsals. The music and actions were one of the hardest. The show was on for 6 nights, and each night was about 3 hours. Our class (room 19) and room 12 was doing the legend Rangi & Papa, room 10 and room 7 were doing How Maui Fished Up New Zealand, room 18 and room 6 were doing The Seven Whales, and last of all: room 11 and room 20 were doing the legend of Te Mata Peak.

We are all now happy and sad that the show was over and we all enjoyed it.

Explanation Writing

How do we make a skateboard work?
Planned by Sam, Conor and Jesse. Written by Sam.

First, you have to put ONE foot on the back of the deck (the deck is the wooden base with grip on the top).

Then, you put your other foot on the deck to get your balance.

Once you have your balance, you have to put one foot down on the ground and push.

Then you should get the hang of it.

After that, you should try a small jump.

Tricks:
Olly, inward, 360, 180, 560, pop shove it, manual, kick flip and nolle.

Now you know how to make a skateboard work, go out and have fun with it!

Ornie

Quite a while ago, Mrs Hinde showed us (room 19) a video. The video was all about a chubby pig named Ornie that wanted to get the cookie jar from on top of the fridge. Click here to see the video for yourself.

This is my story of Ornie:

Ornie

Ornie rushed to a humongous, white airplane at the Napier Airport and jumped into the soft driver seat and flew away into the big, blue sky. A second later, he smashed the big red Auto drive button, smacked on a pair of cheap 50c goggles, then kicked the white, steel door wide open, the door fell deep into the white clouds like a pig named Ornie falling into the sea. Ornie slowly walked to the doorway without a door, and stared down at his small, grey house, frightened with fear. He felt the strong wind pushing him to his left. Suddenly, he felt a strong push from behind him.

Suddenly, he found himself falling into a big… GREY CLOUD!!! He turned himself so his pink, chubby back was facing downwards, looked up at the plane, and saw a freaky metal robot face laughing at him from the doorway. “Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha.” The robot keeped laughing at him. “Ha. Ha. Ha.” Ornie turned himself around again, to see that in 0.8 seconds, he was going to go through the grey, puffy clouds and be able to eat some cookies! Ornie pictured himself falling onto the cookie jar. SMASH!!! Ornie smashed onto his house roof, which was grey like the cloud… but… he didn’t go through the cloud… so… the cloud isn’t a cloud… it's his roof!

Suddenly, Ornie came up with another stupid idea. He jumped into his pink car with fancy photos of cooked pork, and raced down to the bottle shop, going 9,000 miles a second, slammed the door open, screamed at the counter lady, “GIVE ME A STUPID BOTTLE THAT WILL SUCK UP THE WHOLE SEA!” Suddenly, the lady gave him a bottle as big as Ornie asked, Ornie chucked it in his small, stinky boot, drove to the sea, chucked the bottle into the big, dark sea, the sea got sucked up into the bottle, Ornie smashed the lid on, ran with the bottle to his house, closed all the doors, and ripped the lid off. Suddenly, water filled half the house up, and the cookie jar started floating in the big, blue mini-sea.

Then, just as soon as Ornie found the cookie jar floating, he doggy paddled as fast as he can, looking like a dog, to the tiny jar, filled with delicious cookies. "Oink Oink!" Cried Ornie, as he finaly got to have one, tiny little nibble of a delicious, Chocolate chip flavoured cookie... SMASH! An enormouse blue shark smashed the bowl!

Ornie suddenly fainted. Just then, a lady opened the door wide open, and an enormouse wave of  water came rushing towards her, making the poor lady run off trying not to get wet. When the water stopped rushing out of Ornie's house, the lady walked to the doorway, and stepped on something squishy, as squishy as stepping on OrNIE!!! "OH, MY GOSH!" Screamed the lady.

"I'M SO SORRY!" Suddenly, Ornie woke up. Ornie started crying. Suddenly, Ornie saw the lady's face.

Just then, Ornie remembered her... She has the best ideas in the universe! Then, Ornie came up with a simple idea: he asked her, "Can you please buy me some COOKIES???" "Of course, my little piggy friend!" Replied the lady.

So Ornie followed the lady into the lady's lovely car that smells like flowers, and the lady drove him to Cookie World. The lady brought Ornie another jar of Choc-chip cookies, and walked back over to the car... But then, she tripped over a Surface PRO, and the cookie jar flew over on top of Ornie's house. "Oh, porky!" Ornie sighed.

Ornie drove back to the Napier Airport in the lady's flower car, stole a big metal plane, flew up into the big light blue sky... And jumped off... Without wearing anything! THUMP! Ornie's pink chubby face smashed against his roof... "OINK!" CRUNCH! Ornie was jumping around the roof, chewing delicious chocolate chip cookies.

Sourthern Lights

A few days ago, Quiksilver (my reading group) read a story about the Sourthern Lights. After that, we had to retell the legend. After that, we made an iMovie of our retold story, or Telligami ect. This is MY retold legend of the story:

Southern Lights

WOOSH! The waves crash against the dry sand, as the sun slowly floats down, making the sky turn into a lovely, orange colour. Just a few meters away from the shore, there was a kid named Tama Rereti lying down trying to find the early 6:00 stars. Tama Rereti was fascinated by stars so much, he wanted to stay for hours.

Suddenly, rainbow lights flashed across the orange sky. Tama Rereti was amazed. Years went past, and Tama Rereti became a powerful chief, and wanted to see the lights he saw when he was a little kid once more. So, he decided to build a Waka and find the lights again.

When the Waka's last nail got hammered in, Tama Rereti ordered 50 men to sail with him to find the magical lights again. SPLASH! The Waka got pushed into the water, starting their trip to find the magic lights. After several hours, the men in the Waka stopped the boat to have some lunch.

Everyone tried to catch the crazy fish squirming in the sea. SPLASH! Water was getting splashed everywhere. Tama Rereti caught a fish and the fish's tail was squirming everywhere!

Tama Rereti gulped the fished down... but then, a big fish bone got caught in his throat! He tasted fear. Suddenly, he fell to the ground. He was dead.

The 50 men tried to take Tama Rereti back to their people, but then, an enormous storm smashed the boat on great big rocks. Everyone except for two people survived. Those two people told the story to their people. A few days after, the broken Waka and the dead bodies from the boat washed up on the shore.

The people found them, and dragged all the dead people onto the Damaged waka, and lit the Waka on fire. The bodies and the Waka got burnt as the people watched the smoke rising, believing that the body's spirits were carried up into the dark sky. On clear nights, the people could see (And us) a group of stars that the people believe is the killed people on the boat called The Scorpion's Tail.

6 Hats Current Event

Yesterday, our teacher emailed my reading group (Quiksilver) a Google Slide. Our job was to copy the Slide, choose a News site, pick an article, read it, and fill the details on our slide. My one was based in a tsunami that happened in Japan. It was really fun reading interesting reading about things that really happened  and putting the details on a Slide.

Camp

FlaxRock

I smashed the big, grey door open and rushed out my father's car. Everyone else in the kinda old grey car slammed the other doors and rushed out too. My friends and I were running around all crazy, making my father having to stop us many times.

We finally got to walk into the big room, with a cool, brown Maori gate. We walked in the the white, echoey room, and found ourselfs rushing straight to a pair of cool coloured ornaments. I loved the colours and the shape of the soft, comfy ornaments... They looked exactly like the Google Chrome Icon!

My father, my car group (Tylor, Sapphire and Ashley) and I sat down for about a minute, waiting for the other SUPER SLOW people from the Camp Master Chef. Suddenly, kids rushed right onto the Chrome Ornaments. Everyone shuved me off the awesome seats. "MY CHROME SEAT!!!" I screamed in my head, wanting my seat back.

Suddenly, Mrs Hardaker walked in and yelled, "Everyone, please line up in front of me." So everyone rushed to Mrs Hardaker, forgetting that the room is really echoey. The noise was a nightmare!!! Mrs Hardaker kinda rushed to some sort of hallway.

It seemed like a little maze! We suddenly found ourselfs walking into a humangus room filled with brown rocks all over the wall, almost like 50 meters high! We all sat down on wooden seats, and a friendly man walked in front of us, and introduced himself. His name was Aren. After that, he told us some rules about FlaxRock.

Then, he told the parents to call the smallest to biggest kids to put on a special strap thingy that looked like underwear. After that, we sat down and waited, again, to be told to climb. Suddenly, all the parents chose a wall and stood in front of it, with the thingy that looks like underwear on too, of course! After that, Mrs Hardaker choose people to go behind parents ready to climb.

We didn't get to choose, so I moved around the seat, wanting to go behind my dad. A second later, I was behiind my dad! A few seconds after that, we could begin climbing! I was first in line, I think. A clipped the rope to my Rock Climbing Underwear and started climbing. One rock later, I could feel fear swirling all around me. I couldn't do it!

It was too high to climb. I looked down, seeing millions of faces staring up at me. Suddenly, I made it! I reached the top. I felt a mix of happiness and fear. I looked down once again. I was 100 meters high I thought.

I could hear cheering and clapping going all around FlaxRock. But then, I remembered the worst bit... I had to lean back until it looked like I was lying down! I should of remembered! "I don't want to!" I yelled. Suddenly, I felt the rope coming down. BUMP! I fell to the ground. Then, I walked to the next wall, and the next and the next. It was so freaky!

It was so fun there, i wanted to stay for the whole entire day! I hope I get to go there, it was so fun I never wanted to leave.

Our new movie group (The Fun Group)

Some time in March, our classroom was allowed to do anything to do with Learn, Create, Share. I decided to create something. So i grabbed a few friends and asked them if they wanted to make a movie with them. They all  replyed, "Yes." So, the first thing we did was to create a movie group name. We all chose, The Fun Group.
Then, I grabbed a school iPad and entered iMovie. I decided to create a scary movie. I was the director of the movie. After I filmed the movie, I named it, The Haunted School.

After that, I exported the movie and played it. We all thought it was amazing.

At home, I made a blog and a website of The Fun Group.

Our BLOG for The Fun Group is at slamuelrockthefungroup.blogspot.com

Hearing

On the 10th of February 2014, our classroom went into a spare classroom (room 21) for a hearing programme. A lady taught us all about hearing. After that, we went back into OUR classroom and jumped onto our devices, went onto google drive and wrote all about it. Here is mine:

Hearing
On the 10th of Feburary 2014, room 19 walked noisily into room 21 where a lady was going to teach us about hearing. She taught us lots of facts about the ears and here are some of them:

  • There are tiny little hairs (even smaller than millermetres) in your ear and when you hear something, the tiny hairs move around.

  • The louder the noise is, the more faster the hairs move around.

  • If any hair in your ear moves around too fast, it will die. There is no cure for the hair if it died.

  • The wax in your hair is supposed to stay in your ear so if you buy cotton buds to take wax out of your ear, your wasting your money and taking out usefull stuff from you ear.

It is best not to put anything long like cotton buds into your ear cause it could damage your eardrum, but you can put earplugs in your ear, but don't put it in too much!

We also played some activities (bit more like experiments) with balls and pipe cleaners. We learnt a lot today.

Cute rabbit time!

On the 19th of March, a student in our classroom brought her cute little rabbit to school today. The rabbit is a girl and is very cute. Pretty much everyone in the class wanted to pat her. Some other students in the class wanted to take photos of her instead with their devices. Here are some photos I took:

First day at school - Nemo

This week at school, Mrs Hardaker our class teacher showed us a very funny video of Nemo (off the movie Finding Nemo) wanting to go to school very early, but his dad wanted to sleep in. The video is underneath. During the whole video, our class was laughing so much we couldn't stop. We really enjoyed the video.

Nemo video:
